The Common Core

WHAT IS THE COMMON CORE?

Like schools across the nation, students in my classroom will be using the Common Core Standards as our guide to our math learning.  Here is just a glimpse of the key factors that will be incorporated into our math learning this year.

It's College and Career Readiness

Students will have opportunities within my math classroom to develop skills to demonstrate independence, build strong content knowledge, respond to varying demands of audience, task, and purpose.  They should be able to comprehend as well as critique.  Students need to value evidence, use technology and digital media strategically.

It's Student-Centered

Students will engage in learning opportunities that allow them to acquire the 16 Habits of Mind.  These cannot be acquired through excessive worksheets but rather when students are allowed opportunities to practice 21st Century Skills by exploring content, manipulating it and sharing their mastery of the content in ways that are hands-on an engaging.

It's Fewer but more Rigorous Standards

The number of math standards has decreased but the expectation for depth of knowledge is deeper.  This means your child may be asked to master content that was not at their grade level before.

It's Mathematical Practices

Mathematical Practices include
1.  persevering in problem solving,
2.  reasoning abstractly and quantitatively,
3.  constructing arguments and being able to critique the reasoning of others,
4.  modeling with mathematics,
5.  using appropriate tools,
6.  attending to precision,
7.  looking for and making use of structure and...
8.  looking for and expressing regularity in repeated reasoning.

It's Literacy Across the Curriculum

There are four strands of the Language Arts standards that will be required in math class as well.  Students will have opportunities to use reading, writing, speaking and listening skills as they learn the math standards.

It's Multiple Resources

The textbook is just a resource...not THE resource.  Various resources will be used in my math classroom.  The closest thing I have to a textbook is my online textbook.
