Algebra Notes

August 5, 2013

Dear Algebra Parents,

Before school starts, I would like for you and your student to have a conversation about their upcoming Algebra class.  With the changes in the Standards being implemented this year, the Algebra 1 class being offered in 8th grade will be extra challenging.

What used to be taught in Algebra 1 in previous years are for the most part the regular 8th grade standards this year.  As in the past, the Algebra 1 class is a high school level course, but with the change in standards, the jump from 7th grade to Algebra 1 now seems very wide.  To combat this gap, we will have to create a bridge of 8th grade standards to be able to reach the level that the Algebra 1 class now holds.  Thus, things will move at a faster pace than they have in the past.

My plan at this time is to utilize the Algebra textbook in a more traditional approach to gain the skills needed to move on to the high school standards.  Discovery and hands-on activities will also be implemented to allow for the math practices.  My goal will be for students to avoid any gaps in comprehension that could affect math learning down the road.

To help guide your discussion, the following items might be something to consider.  I believe that we indeed have 8th graders ready for these concepts, but at the same time want students to feel successful in math.   If your child shows hesitation in joining this class or answers no to any of the statements, please let me know so we can decide the best placement for your student.

  1. I will complete all homework assigned for the next day.
  2. I will be an active participant in class (ask questions, join discussions, etc) to help my learning.
  3. I will take notes and join in learning activities.
  4. I will study for quizzes and tests.
  5. I will seek out tutoring opportunities from Mrs. McCabe if need be.
  6. I am up for the challenge and will do my best!

Please email me at tmccabe@usd309ks.org with questions/concerns or with your student's decision before the first day of school.  This way I can let administration know of any changes.  I'm looking forward to this new year with all the new learning!

Have a great rest of the summer!
See you in August!
