I can't believe that I've let a month pass before posting again!
I guess that shows we've been busy in the math classroom.
8th Grade News
8th graders have been busy learning how to solve one- and two-step algebraic equations.
We've also reviewed and honed our skills for solving problems dealing with circles.
Now we're working on percents.
Life gives us all kinds of problems and situations where percents are concerned.
Our goal is to master all (or most) of them, anyway! ;)
Questions to ask your student:
1. How does the "fishy method" work to solve percent problems?
2. Show me how to solve the equation -4x - 8 = 12
3. What are the formulas for working with circles? Circumference of a circle? Area of a circle?
Algebra News
We made it through Chapter 6 with all the various forms of equations: slope-intercept, standard, and point-slope.
Now, in Chapter 7, we're solving systems of equations by graphing, substitution, and elimination.
To help us understand these three methods, students are creating HowToons to get the message across.
Questions to ask your student:
1. How does slope-intercept form differ from standard form? From point-slope form?
2. What is your favorite way for solving a system of equations? Why do you like this method over the other two?
3. Which is the hardest method for you to use to solve a system of equations? Why?
