Farming Goes High Tech

Farm Kansas went high tech this year.
As students learn about farming through their participation in the Farming Game,
They are also learning how to keep a spreadsheet.

Students must harvest crops, pay operating expenses, and make decisions to help their individual farms grow.
To help them keep track of all these transactions, we set up a spreadsheet complete with formulas to make the math easier.
It also makes audits go much smoother with the IRS (aka Mrs. McCabe)

Getting Ready for High School

Dear Parents,

It's that time of year when our minds start to turn towards what's ahead.  In math, we're looking right past summer, and what your student should expect in high school math.  We're focusing on math content to help them be more successful next year.  And we're also working on responsibility.  Expect homework most every night.  Homework is due the next day.  Check in with your student daily to see what they learned that day and what homework they have.

To give you an idea of what we're doing...

Algebra students are busy working with exponent properties.  Before the end of the year, our hope is to learn all about factoring polynomials and using the quadratic formula!  Such fun stuff!  :)

8th grade students dove right back into algebra working with combining like terms, using the distributive property, solving multi-step equations, and we'll finally get to solving equations for y in terms of x.

State Assessment Week!

Today through Thursday all 8th grade students will be taking their state math assessments.

To help your student do the very best...
1.  Encourage them.  Talk positively about doing their best.
2.  Have them eat breakfast either at home or school.
3.  Earlier bedtimes are better than late ones.  Alert students perform better than sleepy ones.  :)
4.  Avoid scheduling appointments during school.  Make every effort for appointments to be after school or some other week.

A BIG thank you to all of you that supplied Stick-To-It snacks for our assessments.  The students really do appreciate the small snack as they work their way through the test.

Stick To It Snacks

We are still needing snacks...pretzel sticks, graham cracker sticks, and goldfish crackers for our Stick-To-It Assessment campaign next week!  All snacks should be brought by Wednesday at the latest so we have time to divide them up into snack baggies.

Thanks to all that have contributed so far!
